Susan G. Komen for the
CureŽ was established in
1982 by Nancy Brinker to
honor the memory of her
sister Susan G. Komen,
who died of breast
cancer at the age of 36.
The mission of the
organization is to
eradicate breast cancer
as a life threatening
disease by advancing
research, education,
screening and treatment.
Today, Susan G. Komen
for the CureŽ is an
international network of
more than 75,000
volunteers working
through local
affiliates.
There are over 120
affiliates in the United
States. Up to 75 percent
of funds raised by a
Komen affiliate remains
in the community to fund
local breast health
education, breast cancer
screening and treatment
programs. Remaining net
income (a minimum of 25
percent) supports Susan
G. Komen for the Cure
Award and Research Grant
Program, which funds
groundbreaking breast
cancer research. Through
fiscal year 2005, the
Komen organization,
together with its
affiliates, corporate
partners and generous
donors, has invested
$630 million in breast
cancer research,
education, screening,
and treatment programs.
Susan G. Komen for the
CureŽ has a National
Toll-Free Breast Care
Helpline that is
answered by trained,
caring volunteers whose
lives have been
personally touched by
breast cancer. Armed
with the latest breast
health information,
Helpline volunteers are
committed to providing
timely and accurate
information to callers
with breast health and
breast cancer concerns.
The number for the
National Toll-Free
Breast Care Helpline is
1.800.GO KOMEN.
